Round 1: Peter Wright Memorial Trophy
|

It was a mixed day at Mallala Motorsport Park for RedIce racing on Sunday. Yiani demonstrated massive pace in morning practice, lapping just over 2 seconds per lap faster than the nearest competitor. Ilya was 3rd fastest, 2.5 seconds slower than his brother.
The first race saw a blinding start from Yiani, jumping from the second
to last row of the grid to be leading the pack by Turn 4. Meanwhile,
Ilya bogged off the start and fell immediately from 2nd down to 8th
place. Yiani crossed the line at the end of the 1st lap with a 2.6
second lead over 2nd place – staggering pace from starting towards the
back of the grid. Luck, however, was not on Yiani’s side, as an input
drive shaft failed as he exited Turn 3, ending his day. It was a cruel
blow after the pace he’d demonstrated in the early stages of the race
day. Ilya continued running, picking the karts off one by one to move
up to 3rd place by 6th lap. He closed up on 2nd place quickly, but
didn’t get by Ralf Rupperecht and finished in 3rd position.
Race two saw only one kart from Red Ice Racing out on track – but not
without drama. Ilya failed to get the kart started in the out-grid and
was forced to start from pit lane. Despite this, he worked his way up
the field and finished in 2nd place behind Brett Purdie.
Ilya took two convincing victories in races three and four, winning by
25 and 11 seconds respectively. The win in heat three was his first in
the 250cc International class. The final heat saw Ilya and Brett battle
it out for a majority of the race, until Ilya slipped up the inside at
Turn 7 and pulled a gap to win the race.
If Yiani had not suffered a failure, there was a strong possibility of
the team reaching their first one-two finish in the 250cc International
class.
